According to section 305 of the U.S. Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002 (a/k/a Bioterrorism Act), domestic or foreign facilities that manufacture, process, pack, distribute, receive, or hold food for consumption by humans or animals in the U.S. must register with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This act allows the (FDA) and other authorities to quickly determine the source and cause of any deliberate or accidental contamination of food by identifying these sources through information provided by registered food facilities prior to entry of food and beverages for human and animal consumption,( including alcoholic beverages and chewing gum) into the U.S.
